our white house correspondent, dan lothian. dan, is it all about the timing? is it now or never? is it capitalizing on the emotion of this country or is there something else afoot? >> no i do think it is now or never. the white house sees a sense of urgency here in pushing something forward. when you look back over the past several years, when you had these massive shootings, whether it's in connecticut, whether it's in colorado or elsewhere, there's talk in washington about coming up with guidelines to prevent something like that from happening again. then usually it gets lost in the noise of washington there are other pressing issues that come up. in fact we probably would have been talking about fiscal issues had that shooting not happened. they see this as an opportunity to seize the moment. they believe the president is putting forward a comprehensive plan, but it's controversial. a lot of pushback, not only from gun rights groups but some lawmakers up on capitol hill. >>> if you wouldn't mind we minding viewers. there was a lot of talk about the 19 potential executive actions the

vowing to fight the president's plan saying their second amendment rights are under attack. dan lothian is following all these developments in washington. what's the latest? >> the white house sees these recommendations as a way to hopefully curb gun violence and some of these things the president has backed before such as a ban on assault weapons. the president shortly after the connecticut shootings came out in support of that. so that's expected to be in the president's plan. also pressing for a ban on those high capacity magazines with more than ten rounds. that's the important note here. the aim here is to cut down on the ability of a gunman to go in and release up to 30 rounds in a short period of time. in addition, the president will be pushing for universal background checks so that everyone who buys aunder questi goes a criminal or mental health check. in addition the president wants to request funds be available for mental health illnesst to make sure there's money there for those things to be treated and to provide schools with the support they need for enhanced safet

. dan spring esh is live? seattle, is anybody responding to this? >> the n.t.s.b. sent an investigator to japan to work with their officials. remember the ntsb already opened an investigation following the 787 battery fire you mentioned in boston last week. that battery was in the back of the plane. the one that caused the emergency landing in japan was more in front of the dream liner but all of this will be looked at after a comprehensive review of the electrical system. that review was announced last friday. at the time they expressed confidence in the 787 but now, they are apologizing to customers for cancelled flights due to the voluntary grounding of their dream liner. they announced today they did some safety checks and all of their planes are in service. >> clearly, more bad news for boeing. what is the company saying? >> they are very tight-lipped. they released a one line statement they are aware of the issue and working with the airline. they and many aviation experts say, these are teething issue that happens to every new plane. no one has been hurt or killed. last year was

what happened there. dan springer with the story from seattle. how bad is this now from boeing? because we have seen repeated incidents now with the 787, dan. >> reporter: bill, this has got to worry boeing officials out in seattle. looks like yet another electrical problem aboard the 787. financially this has to be a blow to boeing and the dreamliner's reputation. it happened in wednesday morning in japan on all nippon airways. the pilot started smelling smoke in the cockpit. the pilot made emergency landing there were minor injuries as passengers evacuated the plane down the emergency chute. officials at the airport where the plane landed said there was no fire, which is important but they confirmed smelling smoke. japan airlines grounded all 24 of their 787 dreamliners in service. united airlines is the only american carrier to fly the 787. there is no word what they will do at this point. but this appears to be another battery issue but not the same one that happened last week at boston's logan airport. that was the auxiliary battery near the back of the plane on the under

times. they lost the last election. how dan they get the white house back and the u.s. senate back. i'm going to talk about conservative principles. what we need to do. is take this to the american people and showcase successes all over our country. you have 25 states now that are doing thing that is are working for their citizens. states like michigan that are passing freedom to work. we see conservative principles worki ining everywhere and we w to do everything that we can to bring that to light. i think that is the only way we are going to win more national elections if people see that these ideas are working. where do you think the republican party lost out on conservative principles. what do they miss and what are you going to advocate at heritage? >> in 2010, you see the conservative grass roots a activists got involved. they retook the house and it had little to do with the republican party and it had everything to do with the grass roots activists speaking out. in 2012 it was the republican election and the grass roots were gone. they weren't embraced by the establishment.

a downgrade by goldman sachs. you're looking at shares today down another $2.70. or 3.5%. dan springer in seattle for latest developments in this saga. >> the stock was down from the beginning of the day but that's really stabilized and has been a measured response nationwide among investors and among the airlines. in fact, there are several 787th in the air right now. not all of them have grounded their flights, but the latest in western japan. a warning light came on and then there was smoke in the cockpit. passengers could smell it in the cabin, prompting an emergency landing which went smoothly. there were no injuries but it appears to be yet another electrical problem, perhaps lithium-ion battery that sits just below and behind the cockpit. it was the first airline to buy the 787 and fly them. afterward the chairman apologized to customers and grounded all 17 of their dreamliners for further inspections. japan airlines followed with their seven planes. united airlines have been a safety check on all six of their dreamliners and they are all in service at this hour. severa

the jets was forced to make a emergency landing today. dan springer is in seattle with the details on what happened. none of these planes have crashed, no serious injuries but still a big problem for boeing, huh? >> reporter: that's right. for more perspective, jon, worldwide there are six 787s flying. four of them left to the u.s. or coming to the u.s.. this is not a worldwide panic. this latest incident happened in western japan during a flight on all nippon airways. a warning light came on. a the pilot smelled smoke. it caused a landing early landing but they confirmed there was no fire but a smoke coming from a lithium-ion battery that sits behind the cockpit. looks like another electrical problem for the 787 but not the same battery that caught fire after landing in boston. the passengers and crew all evacuated down the chute. a couple of minor injuries were reported. the chairman of ana apologized to his customers. he ordered all 17 dreamliners to being taken out of service for a safety inspection. japan airlines followed suit with its seven dreamliners. jon. jon: are these inci
